What to Expect From Virtual Brainspotting Therapy Support Sessions

When you're exploring modalities for processing emotional pain or trauma, the options can feel overwhelming. You might have heard of Brainspotting — a powerful, body-centered approach that accesses the deeper, subcortical parts of the brain. But if you're like many of my clients in Venice, Sarasota, and across Western Florida, your first question might be: Can this really work online?

The short answer is yes. Virtual Brainspotting therapy support sessions are not only highly effective, but they also offer a unique sense of safety and comfort by allowing you to process deep emotional material from the security of your own space.

In this post, I want to walk you through exactly what Brainspotting is, how a virtual session works, and what you can expect as we work together to support your nervous system's natural capacity to heal.

What is Brainspotting?

Discovered in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting is an evidence-informed modality that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain.

Its foundational premise is simple but profound: “Where you look affects how you feel.”

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which engages the neocortex (the thinking, logical brain), Brainspotting accesses the subcortical brain. This deeper, more primitive area of the brain is where our survival responses (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) and trauma memories are neurologically stored. By using specific eye positions — called "brainspots" — we can bypass the thinking mind and directly access the nervous system's stored activation.

It is important to state clearly that while I am a certified Brainspotting practitioner, my sessions are designed to offer intuitive and therapeutic support; they do not replace licensed medical or psychological treatment for clinical disorders. Instead, they serve as a gentle, body-centered bridge to help you process stress, tension, and emotional blocks.

Why Brainspotting Works Beautifully in a Virtual Setting

When Brainspotting first transitioned to virtual formats, many practitioners were skeptical. But over years of practice, the clinical consensus has become clear: virtual Brainspotting is a highly effective, deeply connected process.

In fact, there are several reasons why virtual sessions can feel even more supportive than in-person ones:

  • The Comfort of Home: Processing trauma or deep stress can make us feel highly vulnerable. Being in your own environment — sitting in your favorite chair, wrapping yourself in a familiar blanket, or having your pets nearby — can significantly lower your nervous system's defense mechanisms, allowing for deeper processing.
  • No Transition Stress: You don't have to navigate traffic, search for parking, or sit in a waiting room before or after your session. You can transition directly from your session into quiet reflection or rest.
  • Enhanced Focus: On a video call, the focus is naturally containerized. Many clients find that they are less distracted by the physical environment of an office and can turn their attention inward more easily.

A Step-by-Step Walkthrough of a Virtual Brainspotting Session

If you've never experienced Brainspotting, the process might sound abstract. Here is what a typical virtual session looks like when we work together:

1. Preparing Your Space

Before we start, you'll want to find a quiet, private room where you won't be interrupted. I recommend using a laptop or tablet set up at eye level, and having a set of headphones ready. You'll also want to make sure you have a stable internet connection.

2. Tuning In and Identifying the Issue

We begin with a brief check-in. We'll discuss what is feeling active for you today — a specific stressor, a physical sensation of tension, or an emotional pattern you want to explore. I'll invite you to focus on this issue and notice where you feel it most strongly in your body. We call this the "activation."

3. Finding the Brainspot

Using a virtual pointer or by guiding your gaze across your field of vision, we will locate the specific eye position where the activation feels most focused or where your body naturally feels a release. This eye position corresponds to the neural pathway in your subcortical brain where the stress is held.

4. Focused Processing

Once we find the brainspot, I will invite you to hold your gaze there. We will often use bilateral sound — gentle music that moves slowly from ear to ear through your headphones. This bilateral stimulation helps balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain, facilitating deeper integration.

During this time, you simply observe whatever comes up. You don't need to speak, analyze, or explain. You might experience physical sensations (warmth, tingling, release of tension), waves of emotion, memories, or visual images. My role is to provide "dual attunement" — staying deeply present with you and holding a safe, quiet container for your process.

5. Grounding and Integration

As the processing winds down, we will check in on your body's activation level. We'll spend the final minutes of the session grounding your energy, reflecting on what shifted, and discussing how to support yourself in the hours and days ahead.

Who Can Benefit from Brainspotting Support?

Because Brainspotting works directly with the nervous system, it can support a wide variety of challenges:

  • Processing past stressful or traumatic events without needing to retell the story.
  • Managing feelings of anxiety, panic, or overwhelm.
  • Releasing chronic physical tension or somatic stress.
  • Moving through creative blocks or professional stagnation.
  • Supporting emotional integration during major life transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need special equipment for virtual Brainspotting?

No special equipment is required. You will need a device with a working camera and microphone (a computer or tablet is ideal) and a reliable internet connection. I highly recommend using headphones, as we often use bilateral audio to support the processing.

What is bilateral audio, and how does it help?

Bilateral audio is music or nature sounds that gently pan from the left ear to the right ear. This alternating stimulation helps soothe the amygdala (the brain's threat-detection center) and encourages communication between the analytical and emotional parts of the brain, making it easier to process stored stress.

How is Brainspotting different from EMDR?

While both EMDR and Brainspotting are powerful somatic processing modalities, EMDR uses active, bilateral eye movements to reprocess memories. Brainspotting uses a stationary eye position (a brainspot) to access specific subcortical pathways, allowing for a more organic, client-led flow that doesn't require retelling the traumatic event.

Can I do Brainspotting if I don't have a specific trauma?

Yes. Brainspotting is excellent for processing general anxiety, stress, chronic tension, relationship patterns, and even performance or creative blocks. It simply meets your nervous system wherever it is carrying activation.

How will I feel after a session?

Because Brainspotting accesses deep parts of the brain, you may feel physically or emotionally tired after a session. This is a normal sign that your nervous system is integrating the work. I always recommend scheduling some quiet time for yourself after our sessions to rest and hydrate.
